President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque in the city of Shusha on September 27 and viewed the reconstruction and restoration work being carried out here by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
Informing the head of state and the First Lady about the work, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Anar Alakbarov reported that the restoration work in the historical Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque started in November 2021. The conservation and restoration work in the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, which was destroyed by Armenians during the occupation of the city of Shusha, are carried out in accordance with the original architectural style by a consortium of companies from Azerbaijan, Italy and Turkiye and with the financial support of Pasha Holding. The restoration process is carried out under the supervision of the Austrian Wehdorn Architekten company.
To analyze and achieve the correct methods of conservation, samples of the solution, plaster, natural stone, brick, wood, and paint taken from the mosque are delivered to the Ahmet Refik Ersen Restoration and Conservation laboratory attached to Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University in Turkiye.
Up until today, reinforcement work has been carried out in the mosque. The interventions carried out in the mosque during the Armenian occupation have been eliminated. Plastering works have been completed on the facade and inside the building. Painting of the minarets has begun. At present, stone cutting and figure-making of window frames from pieces of raft rock brought to Baku from the city of Shusha are being continued in the workshop. Restoration work is planned to be completed by the end of 2023.
