Phone call between the President of the European Council Charles Michel and President Ilham Aliyev

On September 20, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, made a phone call to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. During the phone call, President Ilham Aliyev informed that Armenian armed forces had carried out terrorist acts in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region the previous day, resulting in the deaths of police officers and civilians, in response of which, Azerbaijan had to undertake local counter-terrorism measures.

The head of state also discussed the agreement reached on the suspension of counter-terrorism operations, highlighting the positive steps of withdrawing Armenian armed forces from Karabakh, disarming of illegal armed groups, and the forthcoming meeting in Yevlakh. President Ilham Aliyev noted that the meeting in Yevlakh would address issues related to the rights and obligations of Karabakh Armenians, including their cultural, religious, municipal, and other rights, based on the Constitution and laws of Azerbaijan. The President emphasized that these actions are being conducted within Azerbaijan’s internal affairs.

The President of Azerbaijan underscored the importance of supporting the regional peace agenda and warned that unilateral actions could have counterproductive effects. The head of state noted that the outcomes achieved would positively impact the progress of peace treaty negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
