Opening ceremony of the Sarigishlag Hydroelectric Power Plant
On October 3, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of the Sarigishlag Hydroelectric Power Plant operated by Azerenergy OJSC in the Zangilan district and launched the power plant.
Sarigishlag HPP is one of 4 HPPs in the Zangilan range built in a cascade method on the Okchuchay River, and before that, 3 other HPPs, Jahangirbeyli, Shayifli and Zangilan hydroelectric power plants, were put into operation with the participation of the head of state. Constructed in line with the green energy zone concept, all phases of work at Sarigishlag HPP, from the installation of diversion pipes and foundation works to the construction of the machine hall and the open switchyard, were carried out in full compliance with regulatory standards.
By installing special devices to protect flora and fauna, 35 percent of the water coming out of the main intake was retained in the riverbed, and diversion pipes were laid, ensuring that the water coming out of the pipe was released back into the river without loss. The machine hall built at the Sarigishlag HPP is equipped with two eco-turbines capable of automatically stopping during low water flow to ensure that twice the amount of the ecological flow of the Okchuchay River is retained in the river. A 110 kV open switchgear facility has also been built at the hydroelectric power plant.
Sarigishlag HPP is expected to generate up to 33 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving 7.4 million cubic meters of natural gas and preventing the emission of 13,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
