Opening ceremony of the Gozlukorpu hydropower plant
On January 13, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the opening ceremony of the Gozlukorpu hydropower plant in the village of Gozlukorpu, Aghdara district.
In line with President Ilham Aliyev’s directive to transform Karabakh and East Zangezur into a green energy zone, the Gozlukorpu hydropower plant was built on the Tartar River, the largest water artery in the region and has a capacity of 14.7 megawatts. Despite the construction process requiring more time compared to other regions due to rugged terrain, climatic conditions, and logistical challenges, the project was successfully implemented within a short period.
A modern headwater intake facility has been constructed at an altitude of 955 meters above sea level. Taking into account all technical and environmental factors, a 13-kilometer-long derivation pipeline was laid through difficult mountainous terrain to transfer water from this facility to the power station. For the first time in Azerbaijan, modern equipment used in advanced energy production has been installed here. This equipment is capable of operating continuously with 25 percent efficiency during low-water periods and 100 percent efficiency during high-water periods.
To connect the plant to the national power grid, an outdoor switchgear facility has been established, and an optical fiber line has been laid to integrate the station into a digital control system. The plant is expected to generate an average of 43 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which will save 9.5 million cubic meters of natural gas and prevent the emission of 18,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
