On May 28, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was presented with the master plan for the city of Lachin.
The master plan was developed by the Baku State Project Institute in collaboration with the international urban planning consultancy group “SA Partners” from Switzerland, commissioned by the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture. The master plan is zoned with the main goal of maintaining and restoring the existing planning structure of the city of Lachin, including the development of new residential areas. Over the next 20 years, the city’s area is projected to expand to 713 hectares, with a population expected to reach 18,000.
The conceptual foundation of the master plan is the approach of “City in Harmony with Nature.” This includes the formation of urbanization center characteristics, ensuring economic diversification, protecting ecologically sensitive areas, using green energy sources and modern technical infrastructure technologies, and increasing pedestrian accessibility to urban services. According to the plan, Lachin city is set to become a sustainable and innovative center characterized by “smart management,” modern advanced education, and inclusive mobility solutions. The master plan focuses on individual houses with yards in the historically existing settlement area of approximately 258 hectares surrounded by natural greenery. Additionally, the construction of multi-story buildings in multifunctional zones and other residential areas is proposed. In the city, a hospital, a memorial park where the Museums of Occupation and Victory will be located, pre-school and secondary education institutions, a vocational school, as well as cultural and tourism facilities will be created.
