On May 18, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva participated in the opening ceremony of Zangilan Mosque.
The foundation of the new mosque in Zangilan was laid on April 26, 2021, by President Ilham Aliyev, following the liberation of the city. The construction of the mosque was carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation with the support of PASHA Holding. A working group consisting of local and international experts conducted an assessment of the mosque’s current building, leading to the decision to conserve it.
Alongside the preserved historic mosque, a new mosque was constructed. The new mosque is designed with a rectangular layout, featuring two minarets and three naves. The mosque includes prayer halls with capacities of 220 and 100 people. The minarets and dome of the mosque were built using tile and brick. The interior features detailed decorative work, with the mihrab adorned with floral motifs made of tiles. The pulpit and lattice elements were crafted from wood. An open-air exhibition was established on the site of the historical Zangilan mosque, which had been destroyed during the occupation. The exhibition reflects the general picture of vandalism committed against a number of our religious monuments in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur territories.
