On November 7, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva got acquainted with the works to be carried out in the historical building of the Girls’ Gymnasium in Shusha.
The girls’ school in Shusha, an independent educational facility, was established on October 26, 1875, by “Kheyriyya Jamiyyati” (Charitable society) organized by the residents of Shusha. To enhance education for girls in the Russian language and with partial funding from the treasury, the Shusha girls’ school was renamed the Shusha Mariinsky Girls’ School in 1894 and became a four-year school. The school started with 120 students, and by the 1895–1896 academic year, 147 girls studied here. During the Soviet era, the building also served as a boarding school. In the future, the building is planned to be used as a center for decorative applied arts and as an administrative building for cultural events.
