President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the Chol Gala Mosque in Shusha to get acquainted with the ongoing restoration work.
The Chol Gala Mosque was one of the 17 mosques that operated in Shusha city during the 19th century. The mosque is located on Gasim Bey Zakir Street in the Chol Gala neighborhood, part of the upper quarters of Shusha. This historic monument was built by Karbalayi Safikhan Karabakhi in the 19th century. The mosque was constructed without a minaret, and like most of the mosques in Shusha, it had a rectangular shape and a main entrance with an asymmetrically arranged façade. Following the occupation of Shusha, the mosque was destroyed and plundered by Armenians.
Restoration work, carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation with the support of PASHA Holding, began in 2023.
