Acquaintance with the progress of construction work at the New Shusha Mosque
On March 27, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the construction site of the New Shusha Mosque to review the ongoing work.
The foundation of the mosque was laid by the Head of State in 2021. The mosque will be a striking example of modern architecture in the historic city. The mosque’s architectural concept carries symbolic meaning. At the instruction of President Ilham Aliyev, the mosque will be shaped to resemble the number 8, symbolizing November 8 – the Victory Day, the day Shusha was liberated from occupation.
The mosque’s two minarets will represent the number 11, marking the 11th month of the year, when Shusha and Karabakh were liberated. The minarets will each stand 72 meters tall. Located in the upper part of Shusha, the mosque will also be situated at the city’s highest elevation.
The project of the mosque is being developed through a collaboration between Azerbaijani and Italian architects. The outer surface of this place of worship will be decorated with geometric patterns used on the minarets of the ancient mosque of Shusha. Currently, reinforced concrete, metal structure, and electrical works are ongoing at the site.
