Phone call between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Ilham Aliyev
On September 16, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a phone call to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of achieving a lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and affirmed that the United States of America will continue its efforts to support this goal. He welcomed the recent progress in the field of border delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including the signing of the statute on the joint activities of the commissions on August 30, 2024, considering it a positive step forward.
President Ilham Aliyev stated that peace already exists in the region and highlighted that the new realities and status quo, based on justice and international law, were established as a result of Azerbaijan’s efforts. President Ilham Aliyev noted that it was our country that initiated the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan and stressed that for such a treaty to be signed, Armenia must renounce its territorial claims against Azerbaijan embedded in its constitution and other legislative acts, as well as ending the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group and all institutions related to it, which are remnants of the past. Touching upon the issue of border delimitation, President Ilham Aliyev pointed to the positive outcomes already achieved through the bilateral process and noted that the process would continue based on the newly signed statute.
