Inauguration of the Giyasli Mosque after restoration
On July 18, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of the historic mosque in the village of Giyasli, Aghdam district, following its restoration.
The Giyasli Mosque, listed as a locally significant immovable historical and cultural monument by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan since 2001, was among the religious and historical monuments in Karabakh subjected to Armenian vandalism.
During the occupation of Aghdam district by Armenian armed forces, the mosque building was used as a cattle barn and suffered severe damage; its roof and domes were completely destroyed. After Aghdam district was liberated from Armenian occupation, restoration work on the Giyasli Mosque began in 2022, carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. During the preparation of the restoration project, archival materials and videographic sources were used to preserve the original appearance of the mosque. Inside, the preserved spiral staircase indicated the presence of twin minarets on the southern side of the mosque, so minarets were reconstructed on that wall. Tilted stone columns were restored with specialized equipment, stone arches and domes were rebuilt. Walls that had lost their original appearance, with mostly fallen plaster, were repaired, and the damaged mihrab was restored. The façade stones were cleaned with special chemicals, and the joints between the original stones were cleared. Auxiliary structures were also constructed around the mosque.
